During the second week of June, you can see in Jämi what it’s like to fly with a paraglider and hang glider.
The pilots will compete in the Finnish Hang Gliding Championships and the first round of the paragliding league in the Jämi Airfield.
The competitors will carry a tracking device in the sky that records and transmits their altitude, climb speed and distance travelled for monitoring of the pilots. After the start, the competitors’ performances can be followed live online.

Typically, competitors are towed into the air around midday and start flying towards the finish of the race. If the finish is located at the Jämi Airfield, as at the start, competitors can be seen arriving back in Jämi a few hours later. Often, however, the competitors have to suspend the flight and land on some arable land. In this case, the pilots will be taken back to Jämi by a car.
The weather conditions always influence strongly on hang gliding and paragliding. In bad weather, pilots cannot fly. If you are coming to watch the races on site, you should check the forecast for the day in advance on the race blog on the competition’s webpage. You can also call the race director directly the day before. Usually the weather conditions for the following day are already known with a reasonable degree of certainty.
