Over the years, Jämi has developed into a popular centre for dog sledding. The sandy trails in the open pine forests provide safe training and competition conditions for dogs and drivers alike when there is no snow. Jämi is one of the most snow-sure areas in western Finland, which creates good opportunities for sledding also in winter.
The core area of Jämi with its versatile tourist services makes it possible to organise even larger competitions and gatherings. Jämi’s central location and easy accessibility attract enthusiasts from further afield.
The local active club Länsi-Suomen Valjakkourheilijat (L-SVU) has been organising competitions in Jämi since the 90s. Already in 1992, the club organised the European Winter Championships in Jämi. The European Dryland Championships held in October 2024 was the biggest effort of the club so far. The event attracted around 400 competitors and 700 dogs from all over Europe. Both the competition centre and terrain and the organisation of the event by the club were praised by the participants.
L-SVU maintains and services the dog sledding tracks in Hämeenkangas, which the club rents from Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife Finland. The club regularly organises joint training, competitions and other events. The club’s website includes a database of information for dog sledding enthusiasts or those planning to become one, as well as information on the trails and upcoming events.
